A Florida care ladder, current median cost ranges, and a plain explanation of what Medicare, Medicaid, VA benefits and private insurance may pay.

The ladder

Start with the least help that safely fits the person's wishes. Help at home brings assistance with meals, bathing, errands or housekeeping into the person's own house. Adult day programs add daytime supervision, activities and some health support while the person still lives at home. Assisted living combines housing with help in daily routines. Memory care adds a more structured setting for people living with dementia. Skilled nursing provides round-the-clock nursing and rehabilitation for people with higher medical needs. Needs can move in either direction; this is a menu, not a one-way escalator.

What it costs in Florida

CareScout's 2025 Cost of Care Survey reports statewide medians, not The Villages quotes. Community-based care runs from $1,625 to $6,101 a month: adult day health care is $1,625 and a non-medical caregiver at 44 hours a week is $6,101. Residential care runs from $5,610 to $12,167 a month: assisted living is $5,610, a semi-private nursing-home room is $10,342 and a private room is $12,167. Memory-care pricing is not a separate survey category. Real quotes vary with hours, room type, services and level of care, so compare the same package in writing.

Who pays: Medicare

Medicare does not pay for long-term custodial care at home, in assisted living or in a nursing home when help with daily activities is the only care needed. Part A can cover limited skilled nursing facility care after a qualifying inpatient hospital stay and while the other coverage rules are met. Observation time usually does not count toward the standard three-day inpatient requirement, although some approved waivers and Medicare Advantage plans differ. Ask the hospital and the plan to confirm coverage before transfer.

Who pays: Medicaid

Florida's Medicaid Long-Term Care program can cover nursing-facility and home- or community-based services for people who meet medical and financial rules; screening, a possible wait list and a CARES assessment are part of the path. For 2026, the individual SSI countable-resource standard used in this eligibility framework is $2,000. Florida's state plan uses the federal minimum home-equity formula, which is $752,000 in 2026. A spouse at home, exempt property, transfers and other rules can change the result. Do not give away money or change a deed to chase eligibility; get individualized advice first.

Who pays: VA and long-term care insurance

A veteran enrolled in VA health care may qualify for some home, community or nursing services, depending on clinical need, availability and eligibility. Aid and Attendance can add money to a VA pension for a qualified veteran or survivor who needs help with daily activities or meets another listed condition. For private long-term care insurance, read the policy itself: confirm the benefit trigger, elimination period, daily or monthly cap, covered settings and inflation protection before assuming a service will be paid.

A short boundary

This is not legal advice, financial advice or a promise of coverage. Program rules and policy terms turn on the person's facts, so confirm eligibility with the program and get advice before moving assets or signing a contract.
