The rumor is usually traced to an old TV story and later tabloid pickup. Reporting that reviewed Florida county data found Lake, Marion, and Sumter were not the outlier the joke claims.

Reporting traced the modern loofah-code spread to social media. Local explanations are much simpler: markers help residents spot similar cars and carts in crowded lots.

The Villages is packed with swingers

STD capital of America: why the joke survives

This is the most durable Villages myth because it is a perfect internet headline: retirees, sex, Florida, and a place outsiders already view as strange. The useful answer is blunt: the public record does not support the 'STD capital' claim. A Tampa Bay Times story republished by News4Jax traced the legend to a removed 2006 TV report that quoted an unnamed doctor and a now-closed women's center. The same reporting noted that Florida tracks STDs by county, not by the Villages CDP, and that Lake, Marion, and Sumter county patterns did not support the national punchline. The loofah story is search gold because it has a prop, colors, and a wink. The evidence is much thinner. ClickOrlando's reporting explains the viral claim and then points to the mundane explanation locals repeat: visible markers help people find similar-looking cars and carts in enormous parking lots. Some residents may joke with the rumor because the joke is already famous. That is different from proving a working local code. Black-market Viagra: a real case that gets stretched too far

There was a real federal case that fed this rumor lane. The Associated Press reported that a 77-year-old Villages resident was accused of buying more than $1,800 in erectile-dysfunction drugs without a valid prescription and intending to sell them locally and elsewhere. That is a legitimate news item. It is not proof that The Villages has a broad ED-drug economy, a secret marketplace, or a uniquely lawless culture. Treat it like any other criminal case: one defendant, one set of allegations, and no license to generalize to tens of thousands of residents.

Disney World for retirees: the rumor that is partly right

This one is less a smear than a shorthand. NPR called The Villages 'Florida's Disney World for Retirees' years ago, and later lifestyle writing kept the comparison alive. It fits because the place is intentionally themed: town squares, staged entertainment, golf-cart mobility, clubs, recreation centers, pools and an around-the-clock activity calendar. The mistake is using the nickname to dismiss the community as fake or unserious. The better read is that The Villages is a large, purpose-built leisure city. Whether that feels magical or manufactured depends on the buyer.

These two rumors work because they point at real things. Central Florida has karst geology and documented subsidence incidents; the Florida Geological Survey explains the hazard and maintains incident resources. FCC Coleman is also real: a large federal prison complex southwest of The Villages, with current facility information from the Bureau of Prisons. The leap from 'real' to 'unlivable' is where the rumor breaks. Sinkholes are address- and cluster-specific, and prison proximity varies by village. This is the place where rumor touches the most real buyer due diligence. The Villages is not governed like a normal small town or a typical HOA. It uses Community Development Districts, recorded deed restrictions, bond assessments, amenity-fee covenants and developer-influenced structures in some districts. That is public, not hidden. Do you have to be 55, and can grandchildren visit?

The slogan version blurs ownership, occupancy and amenity access. The Villages' age-restricted neighborhoods operate under federal housing-for-older-persons rules and recorded parcel declarations; buyers should not assume that every owner or spouse must already be 55, or that every parcel has identical language. What matters is who will occupy the home and what the exact declaration says. Children and grandchildren can visit, and the District publishes a guest-ID program for recreation access. Guests under 19 have supervision and facility rules. Full-time residence by minors is generally not allowed in the core age-restricted villages, while designated family communities such as Middleton follow a different model. Verify the declaration for the address instead of relying on a sales slogan or forum answer.

Is golf really free for life?

The marketing claim contains a valuable benefit, but 'all golf is free' is wrong. Residents pay no green fee to walk the executive courses because those courses are supported through amenity fees. Using a personal golf cart on the executive trail requires a daily or pass-based trail fee. Championship courses are separately priced, and equipment, lessons, rentals, priority enhancements and club memberships can add cost. The useful buyer question is not whether golf is free; it is how often you will play, which courses you prefer and what your annual all-in golf budget will be after the monthly amenity fee.

Can a golf cart replace a car, and do the gates make it private?

A cart can handle an unusually large share of daily life here: groceries, restaurants, recreation, golf and town-square trips are connected across much of the community. It is not a universal car replacement. Golf cars have route, road, speed and driver rules, and the legal connection changes at the community edge and across municipal boundaries. Airports, distant medical specialists and regional trips still favor a car. The entrance gates also do not turn The Villages into one private, access-controlled resort. Is everyone in The Villages rich?

The Villages has affluent households, expensive homes and visible leisure spending, but the Census record does not describe uniform wealth. Residents arrive with different mixes of Social Security, pensions, investments, home equity and part-time income. The community also spans older manufactured homes, villas, conventional designer homes and high-end properties, with very different bonds, taxes and carrying costs. No HOA does not mean no rules

Many listings advertise 'no HOA,' which can be technically true and still leave a buyer with the wrong impression. The Villages relies on recorded declarations, deed restrictions, architectural review, amenity covenants, CDD maintenance assessments and bond obligations rather than one conventional master HOA. Exterior changes, fences, signs, parking, business use, occupancy and other issues can still be regulated and enforced. The rules also vary by district and development era. Pull the declaration, district, bond record and current assessments for the exact parcel before treating 'no HOA' as freedom from governance or recurring obligations.
